liver function test values, results, panel & normal ranges- abnormal liver function tests

Liver function test values, results, panel or normal ranges could me measure to know how well the liver performing. Liver function test values are figure that indicate the present performance of liver. Liver problems can be simply detected when the result of the individuals liver function tests are found increased or decreased from normal value. Abnormal liver function tests results alert health expert as they are a strong signal that the person is suffering from several kinds of medical condition that can cause liver damage of liver inflammation. Physicians are making better use of liver function test normal value in early diagnosis or identification of liver problems or liver damage.

What is liver function test?

The liver performs various excretion, detoxification and synthetic functions, but only a few of them can be measured by the levels of products into the blood. LFTs or liver function tests measure the concentration of several different liver enzyme and protein into the blood, which either generated by liver tissue or release during the liver cells are damage. LTFs or liver function tests are very much common liver investigations test to diagnose any liver disease or liver damage. Specific patterns of liver function test result can tell your doctor about the types of your liver disease and will more facilitated for further rests and treatment. Liver function test or LFTs can also help to inform that how severely the liver is injured or damaged. It also helps to monitor your response on drugs and other treatment.

Liver function test values

When your physician is testing your liver function, then you may interest to know that what a normal liver function value and what abnormal value or result will mean for your liver health. Physician can detect your liver performance by liver function test. Normal liver function test value or result means your liver performing very well.

Liver is a vital organ in our body that plays an important role in detoxification, metabolism, and decomposition of red blood cells, hormone production and some bodily process. Low or high liver function test values are indicates some problems with liver function, liver disease or liver infection, stress on liver due to any medication or liver inflammation.

Importance of liver function test values

Liver function test values is very important to find out any liver complication. Normal liver function test values means you lifer performing its function very well. On the other hand abnormal liver function test results means some liver complication and you live performance is not well. Liver function test values also very important to monitor how better or well the medication are working for patient.

Liver function panel

A liver function panel is a blood test for ensure that how better the liver performing or working. Normally this test are use to measure the blood level of total liver enzyme, liver protein, bilirubin and albumin. Elevated or decreased liver function panel test result means that there have some live complications like liver inflammation or liver damage.

Normally the liver serves various important functions in our body including breaking down waste or toxic substance, changing nutrient into energy for body function and hormone production. Doctor may suggest for liver function panel if you have any symptoms of liver damage or liver disease. These liver disease symptoms including abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, nausea, back pain, dark yellow urine, yellowing your skin and eyes and feeling tired.

Liver function panel includes the following tests:

  1. Total protein.
  2. Albumin.
  3. Total bilirubin.
  4. Direct bilirubin.
  5. Alkaline phosphatase.
  6. AST.
  7. ALT.

Liver function test normal ranges

This result is typical for adult men. Normal result are not fixed, it can slightly vary from laboratory to laboratory. Result could be slightly different for women and children. Result could be affected by taking of some food and medication.

Liver function tests normal ranges are given below:

Globulin normal range

Globulin normal range means the amount of globulin protein which is normal in bloodstream. Globulin normal range is measured against the level of protein albumin; this is other major types of protein in body. Maintaining globulin normal range is very much important for healthy circulatory function. Elevated amount of globulin in blood, it means that chronic liver disease of inflammation of liver. Globulin normal range sometime becomes high during cancer.

Globulin normal range in blood

Globulin normal range in blood is to 32g/L or 2 to 3.2g/dL. Alpha-1 globulin normal range is 0.1 to 0.3 g/dL. Alpha-2 globulin normal range is 0.6 to 1.0 g/d. Beta globulin normal range is 0.7 to 1.2 g/d. Gamma globulin normal range is 0.7 to 1.6 g/dL.

Liver function test normal ranges for total bilirubin

The normal range for total bilirubin in blood is 0 to 20 umol/L or 0.174 to 1.04 mg/dL. We can measure the bile pigment in blood by this result. When bilirubin level in blood is found elevated level, it means excess break down of RBC. Eye and skin become yellow. Bilirubin is a byproduct of normal breakdown of the red blood cells. Usually it passes through the liver and then is execrated form our body. But when it does not happen due to a liver failure or liver disease, then bilirubin levels in our blood can raise and then skin and eyes can take on the yellow discoloration. This condition is usually known as jaundice.

Direct bilirubin

Measuring only bilirubin that normally processed by the liver and then attached to other chemicals is known as direct bilirubin. The normal range for direct bilirubin is .1 to .4 mg/dL

Indirect bilirubin

Measuring the level or amount of all of the bilirubin into the blood is known as total bilirubin. Its normal range is .2 to .7 mg/dL.

New born:  10 to 12 mg/dL for total bilirubin.

Liver function test normal ranges for liver enzyme

Liver function test normal range for liver enzyme is given below:

AST (aspartate aminotransferase)

It is formally known as glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase. Normally this is for liver function test. But AST is not so specific for determine liver function. It is specific for heart and muscle disease. This enzyme which plays an important role in processing to protein that found in the muscle, liver, heart and kidneys. But when the liver become inflamed or injured, then the levels of AST into the blood usually rise.

The normal range for serum AST is 6 to 25 U/L.

ALT (alanine aminotransferase)

It is formally known as glutamate pyruvate transaminase. This is more specific for liver damage. This enzyme normally found in the liver and plays an important role in metabolism and the process that food converts into energy. When the liver becomes injured then ALT is released in the bloodstream. ALT levels are very high with acute hepatitis.

The normal range for serum ALT is 3 to 30 U/L.

ALP (alkaline phosphatase)

This is specific for different types of liver disease. But it also for non-liver related disease. This enzyme normally found in bones, liver, kidney, intestine and some other organs in our body. Children’s and teens usually have elevated level of ALT than adult person, even when they are healthy, due to bone growth. On the other hand ALP levels can also increase when children’s have viral infection or liver disease.

The normal range of ALP is 30 to 120 U/L.

GGT (gamma glutamyl transpeptidase)

Person who intake excess amount of alcohol or liver toxic substance, GGT found elevated level in blood.GGT enzyme is usually found in several liver cells and some bile duct cells. GGT enzyme is elevated in diseases which obstruct or decrease the bile flow. GGT test is so much sensitive and its level also increases due to different drugs, such as alcohol, and even when liver disease in much minimal. GGT level has been use to diagnose chronic alcohol abuse. GGT level should be lower than 60U/L in normal person. Sometime GGT levels are elevated even in the case of the normally functioning liver.

The normal range for GGT is 0 to 45 U/L.

CK(creatine kinase)

This test are specific for myocardial infection, muscle disease, and brain damage.

creatine kinase activity is higher in brain, striated muscle and heart tissue. The determination of creatine kinase activity is a proven tool for investigation of the muscular dystrophy or skeletal muscle disease. This test is very useful to diagnosis of cardiovascular disease and myocardial infarction. Increased levels of creatine kinase also can be found in viral polymyositis, myositis and hypothyroidism.

Following injury into the myocardium, such happen in acute myocardial infarction; CK is release from infected myocardial cells. Normally rise in creatine kinase activity can be found four to eight hours after infection. creatine kinase activity reaches maximum after twelve to twenty four hours and it fall back into normal range after three to four days.

Normal range for Ck is:

Males

6-11 years: 150-499 U/L

12-17 years: 94-499 U/L

> or =18 years: 52-336 U/L

Females

6-7 years: 134-391 U/L

8-14 years: 91-391 U/L

15-17 years: 53-269 U/L

> or =18 years: 38-176 U/L

LD(lactate dehydrogenase)

These tests are specific for heart disease, liver disease and malignancies.

The normal range of serum LD activity varies from 125 to 290 U/L.

Liver function test normal ranges for blood protein

Liver function test normal ranges for blood protein are slightly varies in male, female and children. This protein are measure for observe liver function. Protein is required to build and maintain bones, muscle, organ tissues and blood. But sometimes when there is a problem with the liver, then it cannot make protein as well and protein level becomes decreased.

The normal range is given below:

Total protein

The normal range total protein is 60 to 80g/L or 6 to 8g/dL.

Serum albumin

Normal range is 38 to 55g/L or 3.8 to 5.5g/dL. Serum albumin is a good guide to the severity of chronic liver disease. A healthy liver manufactures plenty of albumin and falling levels of blood albumin show deteriorating liver function.

Globulin protein

Normal range is 20 to 32g/L or 2 to 3.2g/dL. Blood levels of globulin may be abnormal in chronic liver disease. Elevated levels of globulin proteins in the blood usually mean excessive inflammation in the liver and/or immune system. Very high levels may be seen in some types of cancers.
